European Air War DEMO
Published by MicroProse
July 22, 1998

===============================================

Welcome to the European Air War Demo! This demo is intended to give you just a taste of what you can expect to see in the final version of EAW, arriving this Fall (1998) at a software retailer near you. Thanks for taking the time to check out what we've been up to lately, we hope you're pleased with what you see. Good flying, pilot!

- The EAW Team

This is for those who do not have European Air War. Download the demo to give it for a test drive. This
demo features 2 missions. One in a Folkewolfe 190a and the other in a P-51 Mustang. Both are good missions that make the game so addictive.

The demo really does not give much of an impression of what a fully community custom add-on modded EAW game is really like. It will give you a "sort of" feel for what the sim 'used to be like', but it is nothing compared to what a modded EAW is like now! You will be limited to just 640 x 480 resolution, default sounds and sights, default FM's, etc. The demo runs only in Software mode. (The full game looks a lot better with hardware driven D3D and Glide API's.)

The demo however has a few ideas not implemented in the stock retail version; airfield buildings, like control tower, better defined and you can see the muzzle flashes from your cockpit. Example: the FW190 had muzzle blast graphics for the wing cannon that could be seen from the virtual cockpit and fixed views (a semi-transparent flame effect a little better than the standard orange flashes seen in the external views). However, the released version of the game seems to omit muzzle flashes altogether from the interior views.

Demo System Requirements

Pentium 166 (without Hardware Acceleration)
Pentium 133 (with Hardware Acceleration)
Windows 95
DirectX version 5.0 or higher
32MB RAM
Hard Drive with 22 MB free
DirectSound-compatible Sound card
Mouse

Recommended

Pentium 200
Hardware Accelerator card
DirectX-compatible joystick, throttle and rudder pedals

EAW Demo requires DirectX 5.0 in order to run. If you don't currently have DirectX 5.0 (or above) on your system, you can download it from Microsoft.

The demo version is not available in all countries and regions. Also, the demo version and the full version have a different program structure.

Installation instructions
==================
After downloading the eaw_us_demo.exe or eaw_german_demo.exe. Double click on the file. Select the directory where you want the temporary installation files extracted such as creating a folder on your desktop and naming it EAW DEMO. Extract the EAW Demo zip file into this folder, or use the default directory: c:\windows\temp

After all the files extracted, change to the directory and double click on the SETUP.EXE file to start the installation. Follow the on-screen instructions to install the European Air War Demo.

TRIAL

EAW Trial
: (InfogramesEAWTrial.exe 179MB , InfogramesEAWTrial-installed.7z 160MB)
by MicroProse, Infogrames.
Infogrames Free Full EAW game is a 30min Trial download from the year 2003. Not the Demo of EAW. This uses hardware rendering.

It requires a Win9x system to install. However you can run the installer with WinME shortcut compatibility tab setting on WinNT systems.

Infogrames (Atari) had made a deal with some online store to sell downloadable versions of some of their titles. However, what was discovered is that they have added additional authentication and file validation code to the exe and numerous resource archives in the downloadable versions of EAW. That will effectively prevent you from using most of the community mods and add-ons available with it.

I did a filename and byte size compare and these files listed below are the ones that are different from a standard MPS EAW v1.2 Installation.

\savedata\Default05.msn
eaw.exe
eaw.ini
hof.dat
menu_eng.cdf
Movies.cdf
Music.cdf
pic.cdf
text_eng.cdf

It looks like the MUSIC.CDF file is full version from the CD, EAWv1.0. The other remaining CDF listed are much smaller in size than the patched v1.2 files would be. They most likely removed any other game data / assets they didn't require for the Trial version missions and planes to run properly.
